Unions and Senate Democrats on Defense Over Collective Bargaining Transparency

It's not uncommon for bills introduced in the state Legislature to take several years to gain traction before becoming law. With Freedom Foundation-supported legislation to bring greater transparency to government union contract negotiations with public employers introduced in the Washington State Senate every year since 2014, unions and their allies in the Legislature are running out of arguments to oppose this common-sense reform.

Unions Fighting Transparency Bill In State Legislature—Again

Randi Becker (R-Eatonville), has introduced Freedom Foundation-supported legislation in the Washington State Senate to require government unions to be transparent with their members about their finances and expenditures. Each time, unions have opposed the legislation by employing half-truths, paeans to unions' democratic principles and attempts to confuse the issue.

Senate Passes Bill to Block Certain Union Campaign Contributions to Governor

Following a contentious debate, the Washington State Senate narrowly voted to pass legislation on Tuesday preventing state employees’ unions from making political contributions to the governor while negotiating collective bargaining agreements with the governor.

The bill, SSB 5533, introduced by Sen. Dino Rossi (R-Sammamish), passed on a 25-24 vote, with all members of the Senate Majority Coalition Caucus voting in favor and all Democrats opposed.

State Senate Passes Bill Protecting Public Employees' Religious Freedom

On Tuesday, the Washington State Senate passed SSB 5339, a Freedom Foundation-supported bill introduced by Sen. Steve O’Ban (R-University Place) to better protect the civil rights of public employees objecting to union membership on religious grounds.

The bill passed 25-24 on a party-line vote, with all members of the Majority Coalition Caucus voting in favor and all Democrats voting against.
