Washington state’s Superintendent of Public Instruction is considering proposed rules that would add a host of new regulatory strings to charter schools. The rules were drafted by the office of Superintendent Randy Dorn, a vocal opponent of school choice who threatened to file a lawsuit to overturn the charter school ballot measure passed by voters in 2012.
Fortunately, the Freedom Foundation is equipped to fight back.
With little fanfare, the 113-page rule proposal was created and a hearing held on May 26. I was able to submit written testimony and offer objections to the regulatory agencies.
Few others were on hand at the hearing, which took about 20 minutes. In addition to my remarks, the State Board of Education and the Washington State Charter School Association voiced objections.
