How Much Are WEA Dues 2015

Washington Education Association and other levels of the union increased dues again this year.

Teachers now pay an average of $1,015 to the three or four levels of the union heirarchy. The Chinook UniServ, one of the regional union bureacracies, increased its dues a whopping $90 in the last year.

The overcharging for workplace representation is obvious, since each teacher could hire a lawyer to negotiate their employment terms for less than their union dues. Employees forced into union representation need some consumer protection laws. Legislation to protect members, such as union financial reporting on how dues are spent (SB 5226), was not successful this legislative session.

Jami Lund

Senior Policy Analyst

Jami Lund is the Freedom Foundation’s Senior Policy Analyst. From 2004 to 2011, he developed legislative policy as a research analyst for the Washington House Republican Caucus. Prior to that he worked for the Freedom Foundation as the Project Manager for the Teachers Paycheck Protection project, shepherding the development of the Foundation’s landmark U.S. Supreme Court case to protect teacher rights. Jami is an accomplished speaker and researcher, one of Washington state’s top scholars on education policy and finance.
