(SALEM, Ore) – Today, a point of order was made on the Oregon Senate floor that HB 2285 fails to meet readability standards as described in subsection 5 of Senate Rule 13.02 and Oregon Revised Statute (ORS) ORS 171.134. This bill, and many others including several already signed by the Governor are by definition unlawful.
Jason Dudash, Northwest Director of the Freedom Foundation, released a statement regarding the ongoing unlawful actions of the Oregon legislature.
“Process is important. With today’s revelation, the notion that the majority party does not place a high value on public participation in the legislative process seems undeniable. Oregon law is clear, the legislature should strive to include as much public input as possible, that includes crafting laws in ways that the average Oregonian can read and understand.”
“There is nothing limited or accountable about a government that continues to pass laws unlawfully.”
Dudash concluded, “We hope the Senate President will act swiftly to right these wrongs with due respect to his colleagues and to all Oregonians. The Freedom Foundation is prepared to take legal action should he fail to do so.”
