Tacoma News Tribune Highlights Freedom Foundation Fight With SEIU

On Sunday, the Tacoma News Tribune ran a feature story about the Freedom Foundation’s ongoing battle to bring political transparency and membership accountability to two of the state’s largest unions, SEIU Local 775 and Local 925.

State Attorney General Bob Ferguson’s decision to file litigation against SEIU 775 on the basis of a Freedom Foundation campaign finance complaint exposing at least $1.4 million of unreported union political spending served as the catalyst for the news story, though there was certainly much else to write about.

The article discussed the Freedom Foundation’s ongoing educational campaign to family child care providers represented by SEIU 925 and individual provider home care aides represented by SEIU 775, noting that “the number and share of paying providers” has “dwindled.”

Additionally, the article acknowledged the pending U.S. Supreme Court case Friedrichs v. California Teachers Association, which could extend right-to-work protections to all government employees nationwide. The Freedom Foundation has filed an amicus brief in Friedrichs urging the court to rule in favor of plaintiff Rebecca Friedrichs, a teacher from California.

Lastly, the article also featured home care aide and former-SEIU 775 member Mary Jane Aurdal-Olson, who has supported the Freedom Foundation’s efforts to inform caregivers of their right to resign from the union.

The article also ran on the front page of The Olympian and was featured in The Lewis County Chronicle and The Tri-City Herald.
