California: Opt-out record shattered in April

Continuing to build on its spectacular first quarter of 2025, the Freedom Foundation’s California operation broke an all-time monthly opt-out record in April by helping more than 2,400 public-sector employees leave their union.

The workers ran the gamut, from school lunch ladies to DMV agents — all of whom were utterly fed up with lackluster unions that do nothing more but divide their workplace.

By plane, land or sea — or, to be more specific, standard mail, email and digital ads — hundreds of thousands of California workers received informational mailers to notify and encourage them to exercise their right to save money by opting out of their union.

Paired with tens of thousands of emails and over 5 million digital impressions, now more than ever the state’s public employees are exposed to and informed about their First Amendment right to ditch their union.

The effect of our work? In just one year’s time, California corporate unions will lose an estimated $2.1 million — money that will no longer be used to fund their entrenched political operations.

The prevailing theme has not changed from the time the Freedom Foundation set out on this mission. Now when a worker is informed, they are empowered to exercise their right to opt out.
