Freedom Foundation launches Florida union accountability webpage following SB 1296 signing

Fort Myers, FL — The Freedom Foundation today launched a new webpage dedicated to union accountability reform in Florida and its impact on the state’s public employees.

The page, titled “Florida Legislative Impact,” tracks union accountability reforms and the number of Florida public employees whose unions have been decertified under state law.

Since 2023, 3,215 government employees have decertified their unions. The page is designed to inform public employees about recertification requirements and empower them to make informed decisions about their own union elections.

Following Gov. Ron DeSantis’ signing of SB 1296 today, unions must now demonstrate they represent the workers they claim to speak for by securing ballot participation from at least 50 percent of the bargaining unit before election results can be certified.

“The impact of union decertifications in Florida is undeniable,” said Freedom Foundation CEO Aaron Withe. “It sends a clear message to every public employee that their voice and vote matter. We’re launching this page to ensure all Florida employees know the standard they can hold their union to — and to reinforce the importance of accountability and transparency.”

“Florida has done something simple but incredibly important,” added Rusty Brown, special projects director for the Freedom Foundation. “Unions now have to earn the right to represent workers. We want to build on this momentum and reach every public employee in Florida who would benefit from knowing the truth. That’s what this page is for.”
